A counterweight is a mass used to store potential energy and balance or drive motion in a mechanical system. In devices such as cranes, elevators, trebuchets, and rotating arms, the counterweight helps convert stored energy into controlled movement. Its size, placement, and timing determine how efficiently the mechanism behaves and how much stress is placed on the structure.
In cyber security, counterweights matter wherever attackers can influence physical systems: industrial equipment, robotics, laboratory devices, or embedded mechanisms. Tampering with weight, alignment, sensors, or release timing can change behavior, cause unsafe motion, or create reliability failures. Defenders should treat mechanical limits like security boundaries, verifying load, calibration, and interlocks so extreme or malicious conditions do not turn a stable system into an unpredictable one.
