Control testing

checking whether a safeguard still works in practice.

Control testing is the process of checking whether a safeguard works as intended in real operating conditions. It goes beyond confirming that a policy or procedure exists: a test examines whether people, systems, or processes actually follow it and whether it reduces the risk it was designed to address.

Testing matters because changes to staff, vendors, technology, or workflows can weaken a control without changing its written description. In cybersecurity, organizations may test access reviews, backups, incident-response procedures, or security monitoring to find gaps and assign corrective action. Regular testing, with clear ownership and records, helps keep safeguards aligned with current operations and reduces the chance that documented compliance is mistaken for effective protection.
