Control and risk committee

a governance body that reviews exposure, oversight, and mitigation priorities.

A control and risk committee is a governance body that reviews an organization’s exposure, oversight arrangements, and priorities for reducing risk. In cybersecurity, it helps connect technical evidence-such as security findings, control gaps, and threat trends-to business consequences and decisions about defenses or investment.

The committee does not replace security teams or need to review every alert. Its role is to ensure leaders receive clear, relevant reporting: what risks matter, which controls address them, where uncertainty remains, and what action may reduce exposure. This can help boards compare priorities and allocate resources based on risk rather than noise. Effective oversight distinguishes activity being monitored from risks actually mitigated, while avoiding the assumption that a healthy dashboard proves an organization is secure.
