Contextual sensitivity

the idea that data becomes sensitive based on situation, use, and possible consequences.

Contextual sensitivity means information is not inherently harmless or harmful; its risk depends on who has it, what it can reveal, and how it may be used. A phone log, relationship note, or location record may look routine, but in a specific environment it can expose identity, preferences, vulnerabilities, or private relationships.

In cyber security, this matters because attackers often combine ordinary-looking data to infer sensitive facts, while defenders use contextual sensitivity to set access controls, retention limits, and redaction rules. It helps analysts judge disclosure risk, prioritize monitoring, and protect data that may not fit a formal legal category but can still cause real harm if exposed.
