Content encryption

Encryption that protects the email body and attachments for intended recipients.

Content encryption protects an email’s body and attachments so that only intended recipients, or parties with the required decryption keys, can read them. Unlike transport encryption, which protects data while it travels between systems, content encryption is designed to keep message contents protected beyond individual network connections.

In practice, systems such as S/MIME use recipient keys and certificates to encrypt messages. This can help limit exposure if mail is stored or handled by systems that should not read its contents. It also creates operational requirements: recipients need compatible software and valid keys, and organizations must manage certificates, access, and recovery. If those steps are confusing or unreliable, users may struggle to open messages or bypass the protection. Effective deployment therefore depends on both sound cryptography and a usable recipient workflow.
