Confidential VM

a virtual machine designed to keep data and code hidden from privileged infrastructure.

A confidential VM is a virtual machine built to keep its code, data, and memory protected from privileged infrastructure such as the hypervisor, cloud operators, and host administrators. It uses hardware-backed isolation so that even someone with elevated control over the server should not be able to inspect the guest’s sensitive contents in cleartext. This makes confidential VMs useful for handling secrets, regulated data, and security-sensitive workloads in shared cloud environments.

In attacks, a confidential VM may be targeted indirectly by weakening the hardware or memory path beneath the guest, rather than by compromising the guest operating system itself. Physical access, firmware manipulation, or forcing a debug state can undermine confidentiality and expose memory. Defenders rely on strong physical security, trusted hardware, attestation, and careful platform hardening, because the protection model only works when the layers below the VM remain trustworthy.
