Computer-aided engineering (CAE)

software-based engineering work used to design, test, and analyze products or systems.

Computer-aided engineering (CAE) is the use of software to design, simulate, test, and analyze products or systems before or during development. Engineers use CAE tools for tasks such as stress analysis, fluid dynamics, thermal modeling, and performance validation. It helps teams reduce physical prototyping, shorten development cycles, and improve design quality.

In cyber security, CAE matters because the data it produces can be highly sensitive. Design files, simulation results, and project documentation may reveal intellectual property, product plans, or safety-critical details. Attackers may target CAE environments to steal designs, disrupt engineering workflows, or pressure organizations with threats of data exposure. Defenders protect these systems with strong identity controls, segmented networks, encrypted storage, tested backups, and monitoring for unusual access to engineering repositories and file shares. CAE is often part of a wider digital engineering stack, so securing connected tools and credentials is just as important as protecting the main application.
