Component security requirements

Technical controls for industrial devices and software, including identity, integrity, confidentiality, and availability-related functions.

Component security requirements are technical controls that industrial automation devices and software must support to protect their operation and communications. In IEC 62443-4-2, these requirements cover capabilities such as identifying and authenticating users or components, controlling access, protecting integrity and confidentiality, handling security events, restricting data flows, and maintaining availability.

They matter because attackers can exploit weaknesses in individual controllers, gateways, or software even when a system uses a secure protocol. In practice, requirements guide product design and testing, and help buyers evaluate whether a component offers needed protections. A specification or certificate can show that certain capabilities were assessed, but it does not prove every product implementation is secure or that a deployed plant is protected. Configuration, updates, key management, network architecture, and monitoring remain essential.
