Comet delivery is the hypothesis that comets brought life-related components, such as organic molecules or water, to early Earth. It is one possible contribution to abiogenesis-the origin of life from non-living chemistry-not a confirmed explanation for how life began.
Assessing the hypothesis requires evidence for each step: that relevant materials were present in comets, survived their journey and impact, and reached early Earth in a form and setting where further chemistry could occur. Finding interesting compounds in space would not, by itself, show that comets supplied the ingredients for life. In origin-of-life research, comet delivery is therefore a testable proposal whose significance depends on evidence across this chain.
