Cloud sync

The process of copying data between a device and remote servers.

Cloud sync is the process of copying data between a device and remote servers so the same information is available across phones, wearables, apps, and accounts. It can run automatically in the background or happen when a user signs in, backs up, or opens an app. On connected devices, cloud sync often moves health data, contacts, messages, photos, or settings into a provider’s cloud.

In cyber security, cloud sync matters because it extends the attack surface beyond the device itself. If an account is stolen, synced data may be exposed even when the device is not. Misconfigured permissions, weak authentication, or overly broad sharing can also leak sensitive information. Defenders reduce risk with strong account protection, encryption in transit and at rest, least-privilege access, clear consent settings, and review of which apps can read or write synced data.
