Cloud spend

Money spent on public cloud services such as compute, storage, networking, and managed platforms.

Cloud spend is the money an organization pays for public cloud services such as compute, storage, networking, databases, and managed platforms. In security operations, it is more than a finance metric: sudden changes in cloud spend can reveal abuse, misconfiguration, or compromised accounts. Attackers may spin up expensive instances, mine cryptocurrency, move large volumes of data, or leave resources running to increase cost and create distraction.

Defenders watch cloud spend to spot unusual patterns early. Tagging workloads, setting budgets and alerts, reviewing service quotas, and correlating billing data with logs help teams see which project or identity is generating cost. Good cost visibility also supports safer architecture decisions, because unused assets, oversized instances, and forgotten test environments often create both waste and attack surface.
