Cloud services provide computing, storage, and software features through remote systems accessed over the internet. Instead of handling every task on a device, a camera might send video or alerts to a provider’s servers for storage, analysis, or remote viewing.
These services can make devices easier to manage and access, but they also create security dependencies: data may leave the home network, accounts and provider infrastructure must be protected, and some features may stop working if the service is unavailable. In attacks, stolen credentials or weaknesses in a cloud platform can expose stored footage or account data. Defenses include strong, unique passwords, multi-factor authentication, timely updates, and checking which data and features rely on remote services. Local processing can reduce some data transfers, but does not by itself eliminate cloud connections or make a system secure.
