Clipboard data

Text or other content temporarily stored by a user’s copy-and-paste actions, which malware may try to capture.

Clipboard data is the temporary content a user copies with cut, copy, and paste actions. It may include text, passwords, account numbers, URLs, or small fragments of files. Because the clipboard often holds sensitive information for only a moment, it can be an attractive target for malware.

In cyber attacks, clipboard stealing is used to capture credentials, internal messages, wallet addresses, or other transient data that users assume is safe until pasted. Some implants monitor the clipboard continuously, while others collect it alongside screenshots and documents to build a fuller picture of the victim’s activity. Defenders watch for suspicious API use, unusual script behavior, and malware that reads clipboard contents in the background, especially on hosts where PowerShell or other native tools are abused.
