A client-side regression occurs when a software change causes a feature to stop working on a user’s device. It may follow an update to an application, browser, operating system, or a component the application depends on. For example, a browser update can affect a web-based mail workflow even when the mail service itself has not changed.
Regressions are not necessarily security incidents, but they matter because they can interrupt access to files or services and encourage risky workarounds. In attacks, a malfunction may also be deliberately induced or exploited, though a regression alone is not evidence of attacker activity. Defenders can reduce disruption by testing updates in representative environments, rolling them out in stages, monitoring user reports, and keeping a rollback or fix process ready.
