Classification rule

A rule used to place an entity into a defined legal or policy category.

A classification rule is a criterion used to assign an entity-such as a company, user, file, or transaction-to a defined legal, policy, or operational category. The category may determine what requirements apply, what risks are assigned, or which services and benefits are available.

In cyber security, classification rules help organize data and entities so defenses can be applied consistently. For example, rules may label information by sensitivity, identify activity that requires additional review, or determine whether an account belongs to a privileged group. In policy settings, they can decide whether an organization qualifies for a program or incentive. Clear, consistently applied rules improve transparency and reduce errors; ambiguous or fragmented rules can lead to inconsistent decisions and make eligibility or security controls harder to verify.
