Class action

A civil lawsuit brought on behalf of a larger group with similar claims.

A class action is a civil lawsuit filed on behalf of a group of people or organizations with similar claims. Instead of each plaintiff suing separately, one or more representatives pursue the case for the whole class, which can make large, repeated harms easier to litigate and more efficient to resolve.

In cyber security, class actions often follow data breaches, privacy failures, or software defects that affect many users at once. They can push companies to improve logging, access control, encryption, incident response, and notification practices, because the legal exposure scales with the size of the affected population. In vendor and platform disputes, class actions can also influence product roadmaps, disclosure duties, and risk management when customers depend on a shared cloud, AI, or SaaS service. For defenders, the key point is that a single security failure can become a broad legal event, so evidence preservation, incident timelines, and customer communication matter as much as technical containment.
