Chatbot conditioning is the practice of steering a conversational AI toward particular answers, tones, or narratives using prompts, instructions, or training context. It can range from ordinary customization to deliberate efforts to make a system favor a viewpoint or omit relevant information.
In cyber security and information operations, conditioning matters because biased responses can influence users without producing an obvious fake image or viral post. Attackers may try to shape a chatbot’s behavior through its prompts or supplied context; defenders can reduce risk with testing, monitoring, clear system instructions, and checks against trusted sources. A chatbot’s response alone does not establish who influenced it or whether a specific campaign occurred.
