Channel Access (CA) is an EPICS network protocol that lets client applications communicate with process variables hosted by EPICS Input/Output Controllers (IOCs). Clients can discover channels and, subject to the system’s configuration, read values or request changes. This allows operators and software to monitor and interact with instruments and control records across a distributed system.
Because CA carries control-system traffic, its network exposure matters. A vulnerable or misconfigured service reachable through CA may increase the risk of disruption, including process crashes, even without data theft or a confirmed breach. Defenders should inventory EPICS deployments, apply tested updates, restrict CA traffic to authorized network zones, and monitor unexpected disconnects or IOC restarts. Network segmentation and access controls help limit who can reach control services.
