Centralized processing is a model in which one main computer system or platform handles tasks and data for multiple business functions. Instead of each team relying on separate systems, the organization depends on shared infrastructure for activities such as record keeping, payroll, or operations.
Centralization can simplify administration and help maintain consistent controls, but it also concentrates risk. If the central system is unavailable, compromised, or altered without authorization, many services may be affected at once. Attackers may target central platforms to gain access to valuable data or disrupt business operations. Defenses include strong access controls, activity logging, tested backups, change approval, and recovery plans that limit the impact of a system failure.
