A CAB archive is a Microsoft Cabinet file, a Windows format for bundling and compressing files. Software installers, drivers, and update systems commonly use CAB files to distribute multiple components as one package.
In cyber security, a CAB file’s presence is not inherently suspicious, but its contents, origin, and use matter. Attackers may place or extract files in update-related locations and use them as part of a broader execution chain. Defenders should check package provenance and contents, then correlate newly unpacked files with process activity and unusual loading behavior. A legitimate-looking archive or familiar directory alone does not establish that the files or their execution are safe.
