Business records

operational files that can expose pricing, customers, shipments, or financial activity if leaked.

Business records are files created or kept during an organization’s routine operations. They can include invoices, deposit documents, inventory lists, shipment details, customer returns, and pricing information. Although these files may be considered ordinary back-office paperwork, they can reveal how a business operates and interacts with customers and suppliers.

In cyber security, exposed business records can create financial, privacy, and competitive risks. Attackers may use them to support extortion, fraud, or targeted scams, while ransomware groups may cite them to pressure a victim. Defenders should classify records by sensitivity, limit access, protect stored copies and backups, and retain only what is needed. A public claim that records were stolen does not by itself verify that the files are authentic or that a breach occurred.
