Business losses

Financial harm tied to interruption, recovery, or operational disruption after an incident.

Business losses are the financial costs an organization suffers after a cyber incident. They include lost revenue from downtime, incident response and recovery expenses, ransom-related disruption, legal and notification costs, and the operational impact of delayed or blocked services. The term focuses on the harm to the business as a whole, not just the number of affected devices or accounts.

In cyber security, business losses matter because a small number of incidents can still create outsized damage. A phishing email that leads to credential theft, or ransomware that halts critical systems, may interrupt sales, logistics, or customer support and drive costs far beyond the initial intrusion. Defenders measure business losses to prioritize resilience: backups, segmentation, recovery planning, monitoring, and user training all aim to reduce how much an attack can disrupt operations and how expensive recovery becomes.
