Business data is the operational information an organization uses to run its day-to-day activities. It can include customer records, invoices, payroll details, inventory, contracts, internal tickets, and process logs. Because this data supports finance, continuity, and internal workflows, it is often more valuable to attackers than a single device or account.
In cyber attacks, business data may be stolen, altered, encrypted, or leaked to pressure a victim into paying ransom or to enable fraud and follow-on intrusion. A leak of business data can also expose identities, reveal trusted relationships, and disrupt operations even if core systems stay online. Defenders protect it with access control, segmentation, backups, logging, data classification, and retention limits so they can verify what was exposed and contain the impact quickly.
