A bundled runtime is a copy of the software environment an application needs to run-such as PHP, Java, or Node.js-that ships with the application rather than being managed solely by the operating system. The application may use this private copy even when a separate system-wide version is installed.
This matters for security because operating-system updates may not patch the application’s bundled copy. In real environments, defenders should inventory application-specific runtimes, check vendor advisories, and apply the product’s own updates or mitigations. A host can appear fully patched while an internet-facing application still uses a vulnerable runtime.
