A build path is the sequence of steps and design decisions used to turn an idea or set of components into a working project. It can include selecting dependencies, configuring tools, assembling hardware, writing code, and testing the result. In software, the term may also describe the automated process that compiles source code and packages an application.
In cybersecurity, understanding a build path helps teams identify where risks can enter and how to reproduce or verify a finished system. Attackers may target exposed build tools, compromised dependencies, or weak permissions in a build environment to tamper with software before it reaches users. Defenders document and secure each stage, restrict access to build systems, verify dependencies, and preserve logs and artifacts. For a project described only by its finished appearance, the missing build path limits what can responsibly be concluded about how it works or whether it was tested.
