Browser push notifications are messages a website can send through a browser after a user grants notification permission. They can appear even when the site is not currently open, depending on the browser and device settings. Legitimate sites use them for updates, but permission does not guarantee that future messages will be trustworthy.
In attacks, deceptive pages may pressure users to click “Allow,” then use the permission to send misleading alerts, such as fake security warnings or links to scams. This abuses a user’s decision rather than exploiting a software flaw. Avoid granting permission to unfamiliar sites, and revoke unwanted access in your browser’s site settings. Treat urgent alerts delivered through notifications with caution; open the relevant service directly instead of following an unexpected link.
