Browser hijack

A condition where a page makes the browser seem locked or controlled, often through deception rather than real system compromise.

A browser hijack is a deceptive state in which a webpage makes the browser appear locked, controlled, or taken over. It often uses full-screen overlays, endless pop-ups, fake security warnings, or scripts that trap the user in the page. This does not always mean the device is truly compromised; the goal is often to create the feeling of an incident.

In cyber security, browser hijack matters because panic can be used as a weapon. Attackers use it in tech-support scams to push victims toward fake help lines, remote-access tools, or payment requests. Defenders should treat sudden browser “emergencies” with caution, close the page through trusted browser controls, avoid calling numbers shown in warnings, and verify alerts through official security tools or support channels.
