Bot impersonation is the practice of making automated traffic appear to come from a trusted crawler or service. Attackers can copy a familiar User-Agent string or rotate among different bot names, but these client-supplied labels do not prove who sent a request.
In cyber security, trusting a bot’s claimed identity alone can let malicious scans blend into routine traffic or bypass access controls. Attackers may use impersonated bots to probe websites for exposed credentials or other sensitive files. Defenders should verify requests using reliable signals, such as published IP ranges where available, and monitor behavior for suspicious patterns like repeated requests to secret-bearing paths. Bot allowlists work best when paired with identity verification and behavioral checks.
