Best-effort response

Support commitment without a strict guaranteed arrival time.

A best-effort response is a support commitment to try to assist, without guaranteeing a specific arrival time or response window. Unlike a defined service-level agreement (SLA), it may not specify when responders will begin work or what happens if they are unavailable.

In cyber security, this distinction matters when an organization needs urgent help during an incident. A provider may offer skilled responders but, under best-effort terms, cannot promise they will be available within a set number of hours. Attackers may continue moving through systems while evidence changes or is lost. Organizations should check escalation routes, availability assumptions, and any contractual remedies, then align the commitment with their incident-response needs.
