Behavioral policy

A rule that guides what an AI assistant should refuse or allow in its responses.

A behavioral policy is a rule that guides what an AI assistant should allow, refuse, or handle with limits. It can address safety, privacy, authorization, or intellectual-property concerns. In some systems, such a rule is expressed through instructions supplied to the model rather than changes to the model itself.

In cyber security, behavioral policies help reduce risky outputs, such as assistance that could enable abuse or misuse protected material. For example, a coding assistant might be instructed not to recreate a specific existing game. Such rules are not necessarily hard technical blocks: responses can depend on wording and context, and ambiguous requests may be handled inconsistently. Organizations should treat policy behavior as one layer of defense, not a substitute for access controls, human review, or checking that software and assets are authorized for use.
