Base stations are external reference devices used by some virtual reality systems to help determine a headset’s or controller’s position and movement. They are placed in the room and provide tracking references, so the system relies partly on fixed room equipment rather than only on sensors inside the headset.
They matter because accurate tracking affects control and comfort, while equipment placement and calibration can affect reliability. In a system designed to work without base stations, onboard sensors and software such as SLAM estimate position relative to the surrounding environment instead. In cybersecurity, the distinction is relevant when assessing the device’s trust boundaries: tracking may depend on external hardware, local sensors, firmware, and software working together. These components should be kept secure and tested, since errors or compromised inputs can undermine the reliability of the tracking system.
