Backup readiness

the ability to restore data quickly after disruption without relying on attackers.

Backup readiness is the ability to restore data and services quickly after disruption without depending on attackers. It is more than having copies of files: backups must be recent, complete, tested, and protected from deletion or encryption. A ready backup plan also includes clear recovery priorities, so critical systems come back first.

In cyber security, backup readiness is one of the strongest defenses against ransomware and destructive attacks. Criminal crews often try to encrypt, delete, or corrupt backups before demanding payment, because victims with reliable recovery can refuse extortion. Good practice includes offline or immutable backups, separate credentials, regular restore tests, and documentation for disaster recovery. If restoration is slow or untested, an organization may have backups on paper but still be unable to recover in time.
