Automated Indicator Sharing (AIS)

A CISA mechanism for exchanging machine-readable cyber threat indicators and defensive measures.

Automated Indicator Sharing (AIS) is a CISA mechanism that lets participating organizations exchange machine-readable cyber threat indicators and defensive measures. Indicators may include technical clues such as malicious IP addresses, domain names, or file hashes. Automated formats help security tools and teams receive and process shared data faster than manual reporting.

AIS can help defenders identify suspicious activity, update detections, and coordinate responses across organizations, including critical infrastructure operators. Shared indicators still need context, freshness, and confidence assessments: an outdated or poorly validated indicator can create false alarms or lead to ineffective blocking. In practice, organizations should assess incoming data before operationalizing it and follow applicable sharing, privacy, and handling rules.
