Automated exploitation

Attacks that use tools to scale scanning and abuse of weaknesses with minimal manual work.

Automated exploitation is the use of scripts, scanners, exploit frameworks, or botnets to find and abuse weaknesses with minimal hands-on effort. Instead of one attacker probing one target at a time, automation can test thousands of hosts, identify exposed services, and quickly launch repeatable attacks against known flaws or weak configurations.

It matters because speed and scale change the risk picture. Once a vulnerability becomes easy to automate, defenders may see mass scanning, rapid credential abuse, or widespread compromise soon after disclosure. Security teams respond by prioritizing internet-facing systems, patching known exploited vulnerabilities quickly, and adding controls such as rate limiting, segmentation, detection rules, and hardened defaults. In practice, automation is a major reason why recurring weaknesses become operational incidents rather than isolated bugs.
