Automated Enforcement

Security action applied by policy software without waiting for a manual operator decision.

Automated enforcement is a security action carried out by policy software when defined conditions are met, rather than waiting for an operator to decide. Actions can include restricting a device’s network access, changing its permissions, or isolating it from other systems.

In cyber security, automation can reduce the delay between detecting a threat and containing it. For example, a network access control system might restrict an industrial device after receiving a risk signal. In operational technology (OT), however, an incorrect or poorly governed action can disrupt production or affect safety. Defenses should use reliable asset data and carefully tested rules, define exceptions and override authority, and account for stale or uncertain telemetry. Automation should act only within approved limits, with monitoring and a process for review.
