An authorized change is a file modification approved through an organization’s normal maintenance, patching, or deployment process. Approval may be recorded in a change ticket or release plan and tied to a scheduled window, system, and responsible person.
In file integrity monitoring, identifying a changed file is only the first step: defenders must determine whether the modification was authorized. Connecting an alert to a user, process, deployment record, or approved change helps distinguish routine work from suspicious activity. An unexplained or unapproved change may warrant investigation, since attackers can alter files to persist, disrupt systems, or conceal activity. Approval alone does not prove a change is safe, so teams should also verify that the observed modification matches the documented work.
