Authorization binding

The practice of tying approval to one exact action, resource, and destination.

Authorization binding is the practice of tying approval to one exact action, one target resource, and one destination. It prevents a vague “yes” from being reused for a different operation, such as changing a request, expanding its scope, or sending it to a new system. In security design, identity alone is not enough: a valid user, token, or chat participant still needs permission for the specific act being attempted.

This matters because automated workflows and agents can turn broad approvals into a bypass path. If a bot treats a message, ticket, or shared-channel request as general authority, it can become a confused deputy and perform high-impact actions outside policy. Strong defenses re-check the approval at execution time, confirm the requester and target still match, and log the exact operation, resource, and outcome for auditability.
