Authority source

an institution that other systems rely on for trusted reference data.

An authority source is an institution or system that other services rely on for trusted reference data, such as a person’s identity, a document’s status, or an official entitlement. Its role is to provide or maintain the data that downstream systems use to evaluate claims.

In cybersecurity, authority sources are critical because errors or unauthorized changes can spread trust in false information across connected services. In a digital wallet system, for example, a municipality may supply official data or verify an attestation. Secure operation depends on strong identity checks, controlled updates, clear permissions, and auditable records. Attackers may target these processes to alter data or exploit weak verification; defenses include access controls, change approval, logging, and regular testing.
