Attack-path analysis

A method for identifying the reachable chains of weaknesses an attacker could combine to reach a target.

Attack-path analysis is the process of mapping the reachable chains of weaknesses, exposures, permissions, and network relationships that an attacker could combine to reach a valuable target. Instead of treating each flaw as isolated, it asks a more useful question: “Can this weakness actually be used, from here, to get there?”

This matters because defenders need to prioritize what is exploitable in a real environment, not just what is present on a scan. In practice, attack-path analysis can reveal paths such as a misconfigured service leading to credential theft, then privilege escalation, then access to sensitive systems. Security tools use it to rank risk, guide hardening, and focus detection engineering on the most likely routes of compromise. Attackers benefit from the same logic when they chain small mistakes into a full intrusion, so accurate asset data, permissions, and connectivity information are essential for defense.
