Attachment workflow

the path a file takes from message content to user opening or saving it.

An attachment workflow is the sequence of steps an email file follows from appearing in a message to being previewed, opened, downloaded, or saved. It can involve the mail client, browser components, operating-system services, storage locations, and security controls such as malware scanning.

This workflow matters because it connects messaging to file access and user decisions. Attackers may exploit it by sending malicious files or by disguising links as attachments, while defensive controls can scan files, restrict risky formats, and prevent unsafe access. Breaks in the workflow can also result from ordinary software compatibility problems, disrupting work without indicating a breach. Administrators can reduce risk and outages by testing updates across representative systems, monitoring attachment access, and providing a controlled recovery path.
