The Asterisk Manager Interface (AMI) is a protocol that lets authorized software or administrators monitor and control an Asterisk PBX. Through AMI, clients can query system status, receive events, and perform actions such as managing calls. Access is typically protected by a username and password, with permissions configured for the account.
Because AMI can expose operational data and enable sensitive actions, compromised AMI credentials may let an attacker interact with a PBX remotely. In a breach, changing or rebuilding the server alone may not be enough if a copied AMI password remains valid. Defenders should rotate AMI credentials, restrict access to trusted networks or addresses, grant only necessary permissions, and review logs and connection activity for unauthorized use.
