Application switching

Moving between software tools during work, often used as a workflow-effort signal.

Application switching is moving between software applications while working. Workplace monitoring tools may count how often a user changes apps or estimate switches per hour. The measure can help describe how a workflow is distributed across tools, but it is only a proxy for effort or attention-not a direct measure of productivity.

In real workplaces, frequent switching may reflect a fragmented process, such as copying information between separate systems, or simply the normal steps of a task. Security and IT teams can use switching patterns alongside other telemetry to understand tool use and investigate unusual activity, but should avoid treating them as proof of distraction or risk. Interpret the data in context, account for activity the monitoring system cannot see, and validate conclusions against task outcomes.
