Alert integrity is the assurance that an emergency message has not been changed without authorization and comes from a trusted source. It is distinct from availability: an alert service can remain online while distributing false or altered information. Integrity matters because people must be able to trust warnings before acting on them.
In practice, defenses can include cryptographic signatures to verify a message’s origin and detect changes, tightly limited publishing permissions, strong authentication, and audit logs. Approval controls and a tested correction process also help protect the publishing workflow. If a false alert appears, investigators need to determine where it entered the system-such as an account, publishing process, or backend feed-before choosing the right response.
