Alarm History

A record of alerts and events that helps investigators distinguish faults from interference.

Alarm history is the chronological record of alerts and related events generated by a control system, such as refrigeration or building-management equipment. Entries may include timestamps, alarm conditions, acknowledgments, and clearances. It helps operators and investigators reconstruct what the system reported and when.

In operational technology, reviewing alarm history can help distinguish a mechanical fault, sensor issue, or configuration problem from possible malicious interference. It is evidence, not proof by itself: logs can be incomplete, overwritten, or altered. Defenders should preserve records, synchronize device clocks, restrict access, and compare alarms with access records, equipment status, and network telemetry. This context supports more reliable incident investigation and troubleshooting.
