AI-powered fraud is fraud that uses generative or synthetic AI to imitate people, documents, voices, emails, chat messages, or other trusted signals. Instead of relying only on manual impersonation, attackers use AI to make fake requests and identities look more believable and harder to spot.
This matters because many security and business decisions still depend on human trust in routine communication. Synthetic text, voice cloning, and fabricated documents can be used in phishing, business email compromise, invoice scams, fake support calls, and identity verification bypass attempts. Defenders reduce this risk by adding friction to sensitive actions: out-of-band verification, dual approval, strong identity proofing, and careful checks on document provenance and vendor requests. In practice, the goal is to make AI-generated deception fail when it reaches high-risk workflows.
