AI-powered attack

A malicious activity that uses AI to scale, automate, or sharpen fraud, phishing, or deception.

An AI-powered attack is malicious activity that uses artificial intelligence to make fraud, phishing, or other deception easier to create, automate, personalize, or scale. For example, attackers may use generative tools to draft convincing messages, adapt lures to different targets, or produce synthetic text, images, or voices. AI can lower effort, but it does not make every attack technically sophisticated or guarantee success.

These attacks matter because familiar warning signs, such as awkward wording, may be less reliable, and automated campaigns can reach more people. Defenders should verify unusual payment or access requests through a separate trusted channel, strengthen identity controls such as multifactor authentication, and train staff to recognize manipulation. Filtering and monitoring can help, but organizations should not assume AI caused an incident without evidence.
