Affiliated entities are separate businesses connected through shared ownership, governance, or operating infrastructure. They may remain distinct organizations while relying on common identity services, networks, support teams, vendors, or administrative accounts.
This matters in cyber security because shared resources can expand an incident’s potential scope. Attackers may exploit reused credentials or access to a shared environment, while defenders must assess whether an incident in one entity could affect others. During response, teams should verify which systems and access paths are actually shared, review credentials and permissions across the organization, and avoid assuming that affiliation alone proves compromise.
