Adolescent autonomy is a young person’s developing ability to make independent decisions, form judgments, and direct their own actions over time. It is not simply freedom from adult oversight: it develops with experience, support, and age-appropriate responsibility.
In cyber security, autonomy matters when evaluating how digital services affect minors. For example, researchers may study whether repeated chatbot interactions influence a young person’s choices or self-direction. Usage duration or message counts alone cannot establish such effects. Measuring behavior can also expose sensitive data, so safeguards such as data minimization, restricted access, and limited retention are important.
