Active Directory passwords

credentials that can unlock broader access to enterprise resources.

Active Directory passwords are the login secrets used for accounts managed in Microsoft Active Directory, the directory service many enterprises rely on for identity, access, and policy control. Because one set of credentials can unlock email, file shares, remote access, admin consoles, and other internal systems, these passwords are a high-value target for attackers.

In real attacks, stolen AD passwords often come from phishing, malware, password spraying, or credential reuse after a local system compromise. Once an attacker obtains a valid password, they may move laterally, access sensitive data, or reach privileged groups if the account has elevated rights. Defenders reduce this risk with strong password policy, multi-factor authentication, least privilege, monitoring for suspicious logons, and rapid password resets when compromise is suspected.
