Acoustic propulsion

Motion generated by sound, pressure waves, or airflow rather than conventional motors.

Acoustic propulsion is motion produced by sound, pressure waves, or airflow instead of conventional motors or spinning parts. In practice, a resonant cavity, speaker, or airflow source creates force that can push a small object, robot, or fluid in a chosen direction. Because the motion depends on frequency, geometry, and timing, even small design changes can produce large differences in behavior.

In cyber security, acoustic propulsion matters because it highlights how physical systems can be driven or disturbed through non-digital inputs. Attackers and researchers study acoustic coupling to influence microphones, MEMS sensors, drones, or other resonant components, sometimes causing noise, drift, or unexpected movement. Defenders test for these effects to harden devices against acoustic interference and to verify that safety-critical systems remain stable outside ideal lab conditions.
